AHS senior earns spot on All-State Band

An Atlanta High School senior has earned a position in the Texas All-State Band and will represent Atlanta at the All-State Band Concert in San Antonio this February.
Campbell Autrey secured his place after earning first chair in percussion at both the region and area auditions, a distinction that placed him among the top high school percussionists in the state. This marks his first time qualifying for the prestigious ensemble.
“I was really excited about it,” Autrey said. “In the middle of marching season, I started working on the music. Then I went to our region auditions, and I got first chair, which I was excited about. And then I moved on to area, and I didn’t have any expectations for area. I was super excited when I found out I got first chair and made it to state.”
He credited consistent practice and support from percussion director Hunter Hale for his success.
“I went in probably every day after school working on the music,” Autrey said. “Mr. Hale helped me a whole bunch. It was definitely a grind to get there. I don’t think I can process it yet that I got first chair, but it’s definitely awesome. It shows how it pays off when you put in the time and effort.”
Hale praised Autrey’s dedication and work ethic.
“I am so incredibly thrilled and proud of Campbell for becoming an All-State percussionist,” Hale said. “Starting with him as a beginner in sixth grade and getting to watch his journey lead him to becoming one of the top 10 3A percussionists in the state of Texas is so rewarding. Now it’s time for one more audition at state to claim that first chair spot!”
Looking ahead, the senior plans to audition for the drumline at Southern Arkansas University and hopes to earn a scholarship to continue his musical career.
“Mr. Hale helped a whole bunch to get me here, and without him, it wouldn’t be possible,” Autrey said.
The Texas All-State Band brings together the top student musicians from across the state and is considered one of the highest honors for Texas high school band members.
