Superintendent Sidney Harrist Announces Retirement

Posted Date: 01/18/2022

Atlanta ISD Superintendent of Schools, Sidney Harrist, will be retiring from leading the district effective February 1, 2022.  “First of all, I would like to thank the community, parents, staff, students, and school board for allowing me to serve as superintendent. It is with mixed emotions that I am announcing my retirement,” said Harrist.  “It’s been a blessing to serve my hometown school district for 48 years, and I'm extremely proud of what we’ve accomplished during my years as superintendent.  AISD is an excellent district and it’s important to keep it that way for our students. We are well-respected throughout the area and have a lot to be proud of.  I’m proud to be a lifelong Atlanta Rabbit and what we stand for as a district.”  Harrist has served AISD as a teacher, counselor, assistant principal, principal, deputy superintendent of student services, and superintendent.  During his term as an administrator, AISD received an “A” rating from the Texas Education Agency’s school report card system and the Atlanta Elementary School was named a Blue Ribbon School by the United States Department of Education.   Also during Harrists’ tenure, the district approved a bond election to build a new middle school, passed a tax ratification election to build a new band hall, increased teacher salary scales, and improved facilities, including Rabbit Stadium and the exterior and grounds at Atlanta High School.  Harrist will continue to serve the district by assisting with maintenance, upcoming exciting construction plans and facility upgrades.
