AISD hosts awareness luncheon

Members of the community heard important messages about breast cancer, domestic violence and mental health during a luncheon Tuesday, Oct. 18, at the Atlanta Independent School District administration office.

The luncheon, sponsored by AISD’s Texas ACE program, featured several speakers:

  • Dr. LaTonya Noel-Wilburn, the director of Texas A&M University-Texarkana Social Work Program, spoke on trauma and its impact on mental health;
  • Tamara Henderson, CHRISTUS St. Michael Hospital’s Breast Cancer and Cervical Care Coordinator, informed participants on the importance of early screening for breast cancer;
  • Jennifer Peoples discussed psychiatry and behavioral medicine services that are available to school-aged children. She is the program director for Texas Child Health Access Through Telemedicine (TCHATT) and Youth Aware of Mental Health (YAM) programs; and
  • Alicia Harrison-Brown spoke about the Maximus and Texas Women Healthy Program.

“There are so many free resources that families are not aware of that can change the quality of their lives and help reduce financial stress,” ACE Family Engagement coordinator Angela Thompson said. “It’s important for families to know how they can receive the services that can improve their physical and mental health.”
